Exhaustive Search for Maximal Length Coil-in-the-Box Codes

چکیده
An n-bit coil is a sequence of length n binary strings which corresponds to an induced cycle in the n-dimension hypercube. Coils have a variety of applications and usually the longer the coil the more useful it is in the application. The longest possible coils for n ≤ 7 were found by exhaustive search. Several heuristic based computational techniques including stochastic hill-climbing technique, genetic algorithms, neural network and other evolutionary algorithms have been used to find a lower bound for the maximum length of coils for n = 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Most of the current approaches on this problem were built on the exhaustive search algorithm in [Koc96] which currently requires more than a month of computation time to exhaustively search the longest coils for n = 7. In this paper, we describe some heuristics that can improve the runtime for the exhaustive search of the longest coils. There is an improvement by a factor of approximately 18 on the runtime for an exhaustive search for n = 7 when compared to [Koc96].

متن کاملImplementing Exhaustive Search for the Coil-in-the-box Problem using MPI
This paper addresses parallelization of the exhaustive search for solving the coil-in-the-box problem. Since exhaustively solving the problem takes roughly 20 days, compairing different techniques to prune the search tree is unrealistic. However, every subtree of the search tree can be treated individually, an ideal setup for parallelization techniques. We present a simple client server archite...
متن کاملSnakes, coils, and single-track circuit codes with spread k
The snake-in-the-box problem is concerned with finding a longest induced path in a hypercube Qn. Similarly, the coil-in-the-box problem is concerned with finding a longest induced cycle in Qn. We consider a generalization of these problems that considers paths and cycles where each pair of vertices at distance at least k in the path or cycle are also at distance at least k in Qn. We call these ...
متن کاملOn the classification of $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes
In this note, we study the classification of Z4-codes. For some special cases (k1, k2), by hand, we give a classification of Z4-codes of length n and type 4122 satisfying a certain condition. Our exhaustive computer search completes the classification of Z4-codes of lengths up to 7.
متن کاملAn efficient improvement of the Newton method for solving nonconvex optimization problems
Newton method is one of the most famous numerical methods among the line search methods to minimize functions. It is well known that the search direction and step length play important roles in this class of methods to solve optimization problems. In this investigation, a new modification of the Newton method to solve unconstrained optimization problems is presented. The significant ...
